Teachers, youth leaders, homeschool parents and mentors:

Come to a "Junior Solar Sprint -- Getting Started" workshop and get set to bring the program to your kids. Workshops are designed to help prepare participants for a successful experience in leading middle school kids through Junior Solar Sprint, where middle school kids design, build and compete with model solar electric cars. Over 15,000 teachers and over 100,000 students are estimated to have participated in this exciting and highly engaging program since it began in the early 1990's.

At a JSS workshop, you:

  • Learn how to lead students to design, build, and race model cars powered by solar energy.
  • Build a model sprint car and review lesson plans that will help students do the same.
  • Receive tips, lesson plans and resources to engage students in engineering design, teamwork, craftsmanship, problem solving, and studies of carbon cycle, global warming, fossil fuel issues, solar energy, simple machines, transportation technology, renewable energy and more.
  • Receive a professional development letter for the hours attended at the JSS workshop.

Most workshops are offered FREE of charge, unless connected with a conference. NESEA workshops are funded by the U.S. Army and materials donations from Pitsco. Registration prior to the workshop is required. Also, some NESEA workshops offer a door prize -- often a Free Pitsco JSS solar panel!

Registration:

Click the link under "How to Register" next to the workshop of your choice. Registration is required. Where space is limited, participation is on a first come, first served basis, but if the workshop is approaching, feel free to call or email to check on availability. Confirmation of registration and directions link will be emailed to registrants prior to the workshop. In the event of weather cancellation and rescheduling, you will be notified via email or phone. Please email sreyes@nesea.org or call 413-774-6051 x 27 prior to the event if you are unable to attend so we can give your space to another educator if there is a wait list.

Seeking a New York City-Long Island Area Event Coordinator:

Two workshops in the NYC and Long Island areas in Fall 2009 were held with a total of over 50 teachers attending. There is an area event in Westchester County (See Bill Rock's contact information on the Area Coordinators page) and a few in northern New Jersey, in which these teachers may participate, but a Long Island/NYC event would be great! If you would like to consider becoming an Area Event Coordinato, please contact NESEA. Experience in coordinating events is helpful but not required. Enthusiasm, connections with educators and good organizational skills help make a great coordinator. Please contact NESEA for more information regarding this opportunity. sreyes@nesea.org or acollins@nesea.org.
