Plenary Session, Part 1: Beyond Energy: The Concealed Environmental Impact of Buildings and Residents

When it comes to environmental impacts of buildings, operational energy (and to some degree carbon) attracts the most attention. This is likely because buildings currently account for one third of the world’s energy use, and this figure is projected to double by 2050. This presents both a huge challenge and a great opportunity to improve the sustainability of the built environment.

The public has a hard time knowing what to think about natural gas. Is it a cheap, clean source of energy independence for the US for the rest of the century; a useful bridge fuel until renewables are able to come fully on board in 10 or 20 years; hands-down the best choice for heating buildings in the NESEA region; possibly worse than coal when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions; or all of the above?

Reception and Closing Forum: Be Careful What You Ask For: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Rapid Energy Efficiency Adoption

In just a few years we have seen energy-efficient construction taken more seriously and among a larger circle of practitioners than ever before. Adoption of the Passive House standard is accelerating, with over three million square feet planned in New York State alone. Code requirements for insulation and air sealing have become more stringent and enforceable, with mandatory blower door testing being perhaps most notable.
